What makes PicoSure safer?

PicoSure is an aesthetic laser system that was originally created to remove tattoos more effectively and less painfully than traditional laser systems. It delivers light energy in trillionths of a second, creating pressure waves instead of extreme heat to remove areas of hyperpigmentation. When operated by a qualified professional like Ernest M. Myers, M.D., F.A.C.S., PicoSure’s unique delivery system via its Focus™ lens array is very effective at removing skin discolorations such as freckles, age spots, and areas of redness or hyperpigmentation associated with acne and other scars.

How does it work?

The PicoSure with its Focus lens array delivers bursts of energy deep into the dermis without causing harm to the outer skin layer. These energy pulses break up the pigment as it stimulates new collagen and elastin production that sweeps away damaged tissue and creates a new skin surface that shows improved texture and smoothness.

Will I need more than one treatment?

The number of treatments required depends upon the nature and extent of the hyperpigmentation. Pigment traverses multiple skin layers and PicoSure clears the discoloration layer by layer. It typically takes 3-5 treatments spaced four weeks apart for optimal results. Ernest M. Myers, M.D., F.A.C.S. will discuss expectations during your initial appointment and help formulate an effective treatment plan.

Does it work on all skin types?

Yes. Some lasers restrict use to patients with lighter skin tones since laser energy is attracted to pigment and the heat from the laser may cause damage to darkly pigmented skin. PicoSure with Focus lens array is safe and effective for all skin types because it uses pressure rather than heat to remove hyperpigmented lesions.

How long does a treatment last?

PicoSure treatments are fast, typically 10-15 minutes long. You may notice slight redness and mild swelling for one to three hours after the treatment, but most patients return to work and routine activities immediately following the treatment. Traditional laser treatments can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours to complete, depending on the surface area being treated, and it can take weeks to months for your skin to heal.

Is it painful?

With PicoSure, most patients report a stinging sensation that’s similar to a rubber band snapping against your skin. Numbing cream can prevent even this mild discomfort. Traditional laser treatments typically require local anesthetic and possibly even general anesthesia for larger treatment area.
