Shaped like teardrops or grapes, they may be caused by chronic or long-term inflammation of the nasal or sinus membranes due to recurring infection, allergies, or other disorders.
The polyps themselves are not painful but may cause:
- Difficulty breathing
- Loss of smell
- Persistently stuffy or runny nose
- Significant postnasal drip
- Decreased sense of taste
- Sinus congestion leading to facial pain or pressure over the cheeks and forehead
- Headaches
- Snoring
What causes chronic sinus infections?
Chronic sinusitis occurs when the cavities around nasal passages or sinuses become persistently inflamed and swollen. Symptoms may include:
- Discolored discharge from the nose
- Postnasal drainage
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Pain, tenderness and swelling around the eyes, cheeks, nose or forehead
