request an appointmentWhat is PicoSure?
PicoSure is an aesthetic laser system that was first created to remove tattoos. It delivers light energy in trillionths of a second, creating pressure waves to rejuvenate skin rather than producing the extreme heat associated with other lasers. By using less heat, PicoSure reduces the appearance of wrinkles effectively without burning the surrounding tissue. This greatly decreases discomfort and risks of complications as well as the extended recovery time noted with other laser techniques.
How does it reduce wrinkles?
Science has discovered that when your cells are damaged, they signal other cells to increase production of proteins such as collagen to help in the healing process. PicoSure’s innovative technology is designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes to restore youthful skin.
PicoSure uses a Focus™ lens array to convert laser energy into pressure waves that squeeze rather than burn surface cells. This activates the body’s healing processes and results in smoother skin without damaging surrounding tissue. Mild to moderate wrinkles are smoothed away without the sometimes significant pain and need for the long recovery time required by some laser treatments.
What is a treatment like?
There’s no special preparation necessary before you have a PicoSure treatment. Sessions typically take 10-15 minutes due to the speed of the laser light pulses. Other laser treatments take from 30 minutes to two hours to complete, depending on the area being treated. With PicoSure, most people experience no pain other than a mild stinging sensation as your provider moves the Focus lens array across the areas undergoing treatment.
Your provider can apply topical numbing cream to alleviate the mild discomfort caused by the PicoSure system. Other laser treatments require local anesthesia to completely numb treatment areas. Some procedures involve sedation and even general anesthesia to prevent pain.
What is recovery like?
You can expect to experience mild redness and slight swelling in the treatment areas, and it generally fades within one to three hours. You can apply moisturizers or makeup immediately after a treatment and resume normal activities once you leave the office.
Traditional laser resurfacing methods take anywhere from seven to 21 days to heal. Much like it would after severe sunburn, your skin dries and peels away within about five days of traditional treatments, leaving behind a sensitive layer of skin that requires special treatment for weeks to months. The redness caused by traditional laser treatments may take six months to fully resolve.
